How to Avoid Spam With a Temporary Email Address

Learn how to avoid spam with a temporary email: when to give a throwaway address, the four-step routine, and what it cannot clean from your real inbox.

By FreeTemp3 min read

You can avoid spam with a temporary email by never giving your real address to a site you will not use again. The site gets an address that disappears soon, so its offers and newsletters have nowhere to go. Your real inbox stays quiet because it never joined the list.

How spam finds you

Most promotional mail starts with one form. You enter your address to download a file, enter a contest or read an article, and the site keeps it. After that, any mailing from that site, or from partners it shares with, reaches you. A temporary address cuts the chain at the first step.

The four-step routine

  1. Open FreeTemp and copy the new address.
  2. Paste it into the form and submit.
  3. Take what you came for, such as the confirmation code or the download link, from the inbox.
  4. Close the tab. When the timer ends, the address ends, and later mailings from that site reach nobody.

A worked example

You want a free template that asks for an email before the download. You copy a FreeTemp address, submit the form, and the link arrives in the inbox within seconds. You download the file and close the page. The site may still add the address to its list, but nobody can read what it sends.

What this does not do

A temporary address does not clean spam that already reached your real inbox, and it does not stop a site that already has your real address. For those, use the unsubscribe link in the message or the spam button of your mail app, and give the real address less often from now on.

Frequently asked questions

Does a temporary email stop all spam?

No. It stops spam from sites you give it to. Spam that already reaches your real address needs the unsubscribe link or your mail app's spam button.

Will the site still send mail to my temporary address?

It may try, but the inbox ends after its timer, so the messages reach nobody.

Should I use a temporary email for newsletters?

Only for ones you do not want. For newsletters you enjoy, use your real address or an alias so you keep receiving them.
